If you are ready to prove that women can help other women become powerful, join Mariela Dabbah and the Red Shoe Movement! Wear your red shoes to work on Tuesdays to signal your support for other women's career goals. Men can wear Red Ties to show support!
By wearing your red shoes to work on Tuesdays (and whenever possible) and letting people know that you support the Red Shoe Movement (RSM), you will not only establish yourself as a supporter of women but also inspire other women to join the movement. It's very likely that the sheer peer pressure will drive a new conversation at work about women supporting one another.
What are the principles behind the movement?
If you decide to join Mariela Dabbah and the Red Shoe Movement, we ask that you include the RSM Logo on your Facebook page and that you adhere to a few simple principles:
Refrain from bad-mouthing other women
Avoid using labels that contribute to stereotype women
Mentor younger or less experienced women whenever you have a chance
Offer opportunities to women who are eager to learn and open to feedback
Provide honest feedback to women in your network, and avoid hurtful comments or unnecessary criticism
Cultivate your relationship with women on your team
Celebrate selflessly the accomplishments of other women
The Red Shoe Book Clubs
Create a book club with work colleagues or your friends so you can all read the book together. It is a perfect way to help each other decide what each of you wants for your future, to figure out what old messages and mandates might still be interfering with your career advancement and to refine the brand of each member. The group can easily become the Board of Advisors for each woman. Set up weekly or monthly meetings to read aloud or to discuss what you've read on your own. This provides an intimate setting in which it is easier to share personal stories. Look for the upcoming Reader's Guide for the book.
From Red Shoe Book Club to Red Shoe Support Network
What starts as a book club will quickly become a support network. As you help each other figure out the topics discussed in the book, you will come closer. After you finish doing the work proposed, use your meetings as an opportunity to:
Help each member achieve specific goals
Invite speakers to discuss issues of interest
Create larger events
Strategize as a group how to better extend your influence to other women in your organizations
Every time you support a woman in your network we want to hear about it! Post your anecdotes and pictures on our page.
Your book club should post accomplishments by its members as a result of reading the book, and working together. We would also love to see pictures of you wearing your red shoes!
Talk about the Red Shoe Movement every time you can
Whenever you have a chance, share with the world that you support this movement, that you support women's professional growth and that you are putting your money where your mouth is. The more you say it, the more you put yourself on the spot. Women will approach you for help and you must be ready to respond.
